Application Information
23rd International Summer Symposium on Science and World Affairs
August, 2011 (exact dates to be determined)
London, England
Participation in the Summer Symposium is by invitation only. Every year, we try to identify potential new participants who would be appropriate for this meeting. Only people already working on the technical aspects of arms control or those who are seriously contemplating working in the future on such issues should apply. Lack of experience is not necessarily a drawback. The ideal applicant is someone who has an advanced degree in a technical field, is working full-time on security issues or seeking to do so, and has demonstrated interest in questions related to public policy or been engaged in community-level activism. If you are interested in applying, please send us the information requested below.
The Symposium will include roughly 40 participants. Each participant is required to give a presentation on research he or she is doing or is planning to do. (See Guidelines for Talks for a general idea of the format). In addition, each participant is required to prepare a written version of his or her presentation, which will be distributed at the beginning of the meeting. There is no conference fee and all expenses and travel costs associated with attending the meeting will be covered.
If you are interested in attending the symposium, please send a comprehensive curriculum vitae, details of your present position and future career plans, and a statement of research interests (300-500 words). If you do not have prior experience in arms control, this statement should discuss why you are interested in the field, what specific topics you are interested in, and any ideas you have for future research in this field.
Please send these materials to Teri Grimwood at the Union of Concerned Scientists Global Security Program, email strongly preferred. There is no firm deadline for applications. If you have any questions about the Symposium, please contact her as well. She can be reached in the following ways:
