Guidelines for Presentations for the Summer Symposium
A key purpose for these meetings is to help develop analysts who not only know the technical issues, but who also understand the policy issues involved in the arms control field. We see policy issues as the drivers since the point, of course, is to help train people who understand the technical issues that are key to making progress on important policy issues. Choosing important issues to work on requires an understanding of the policy context of technical topics. We therefore want people to treat the policy context of their work as being as important as the technical research that might occupy most of their actual work on the project. As a result, we see it as important that presentations not focus just on technical issues, but also include the policy context of these issues. Thus, besides describing the research done, presentations should make clear the policy context of this research and the implications of the research for the related policy questions. Suggested format for presentations: - Begin by making clear the policy issue that motivates the research you are doing.
- Give a clear statement of the specific questions your research is trying to answer and how they are relevant to the larger policy issue.
- Describe the analysis you have done or that is in progress.
- Present the results of your research (if available), and discuss their implications for the policy issue.
- List some remaining important questions for future research.
