RESOURCE LIBRARY--PERIODICALS
Several journals and annually published volumes regularly contain articles and information of use to scientists and arms control researchers. What follows is not a comprehensive list but rather some suggestions for standard references in each area. If you know of a useful periodical to add to this list, email dmontague@ucsusa.org. This list was originally compiled by Sharon Weiner in 1999. Arms Control and Non-Proliferation Journals
- The Arms Control Reporter, produced by the Institute for Defense and Disarmament Studies, provides an annual report of progress on arms control negotiations and treaty implementation.
- Arms Control Today (www.armscontrol.org/ACT/act.html) is the monthly journal of the Arms Control Association. It contains articles on arms control, news updates, and a bibliography of recent publications. Some issues are on-line.
- The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists (www.the bulletin.org) carries general articles and updates on security issues with a special focus on nuclear issues. Selected articles can be found on their website.
- Disarmament Diplomacy (www.acronym.org.uk) is a monthly review of news and documents relating to disarmament and arms control, including close coverage of the UN Conference on Disarmament. Available on-line, it also includes opinion pieces from the arms control community.
- Energy and Security (www.ieer.org) is a newsletter of nuclear non-proliferation, disarmament and energy sustainability. It is published by the Institute for Energy and Environmental Research in English, Russian, French, Chinese, and Japanese.
- Issue Reviews (http://www.ppnn.soton.ac.uk/issrevs.htm) are published periodically by the Programme for Promoting Nuclear Non-Proliferation at the Mountbatten Centre for International Studies, University of Southampton. Focusing on strengthening the nuclear non-proliferation regime, the journal aims to make policy makers, government officials, the academic community, industry and public media, more aware of the nature and causes of the proliferation of nuclear weapons, the need to deter them, and the factors that might advance nuclear disarmament.
- The Nonproliferation Review features articles, viewpoints, and reports on a variety of nonproliferation problems, including the spread of nuclear, missile, chemical, biological, and advanced conventional technologies.
- Science for Democratic Action (http://www.ieer.org/sdafiles/index.html), published by the Institute for Energy and Environmental Research, provides accessible scientific information, analysis, and technical data to activists. Its articles explain technical issues such as clean-up and disposition options for plutonium, opinion pieces and editorials, and problems for activists to solve so that they can acquire and improve their technical skills.
- Trust and Verify, the journal of the Verification Research, Training and Information Centre (VERTIC), provides analysis and news of verification developments and information on VERTIC's activities. VERTIC also publishes Verification Yearbooks (see below), an annual series on developments in arms control verification. Tables of contents, as well as research reports, can be found at http://www.vertic.org/tnv/tnv.html.
- Verification Yearbook, published annually by the Verification Research, Training and Information Centre (VERTIC), covers verification of arms control and disarmament. Also includes verification of environmental treaties and peace agreements as well as more general information on veriication and compliance tools and mechanisms.
- World Military Expenditures and Arms Transfers, published by the Arms Control and Disarmament Agency, is intended to serve as a convenient reference on military expenditures, arms transfers, armed forces, and related economic data for 172 countries.
Anti-Nuclear and Disarmament Journals
- Anumukti is an activist journal for the abolition of nuclear power and nuclear weapons in India. It is published several times throughout the year. For more information, email admin@anumukti.ilbom.ernet.in
- Peace Magazine (www.peacemagazine.org) offers a Canadian perspective on various aspects of international security and human rights. It is available on-line.
- The INESAP Information Bulletin looks at the science, technology and policy issues involved in the abolition of nuclear weapons around the world. It is produced by the Interdisciplinary Research Group on Science, Technology and Security at Darmstadt University of Technology. The INESAP Bulletin carries reports on the Summer Symposium and occassionally papers delivered there.
Peace Research Journals
- The Journal of Conflict Resolution offers an interdisciplinary look at social scientific theory and research on human conflict. It focuses especially on international conflict, but also carries articles on intergroup conflict, within as well as between nations, that may help in understanding problems of war and peace.
- The Journal of Peace Research provides an interdisciplinary and international perspective on scholarly work in peace research. It focuses on peace and peacemaking and the causes of violence and conflict resolution.
- Security Dialogue focuses on creating an interregional dialogue on issues of global security. The journal's goals is to serve as a channel of communication between researchers and the users of research, be they international civil servants, journalists, politicians, NGOs, diplomats or the military.
Periodicals with Information on Conventional and Nuclear Weapons and Nuclear Energy
- Aerospace Daily provides information about current events in the aerospace industry.
- The Air University Library Index to Military Periodicals offers an excellent and frequently updated list of publications on defense and security issues that is searchable by keyword. The Index includes many main stream periodicals as well as more obscure publications from U.S. military schools and organizations.
- The Asian Defence Journal offers coverage of contemporary developments on military and defense policies in Asia.
- Aviation Week and Space Technology (http://www.AviationNow.com/content/publication/awst/awst.htm ) is a weekly magazine that covers the commercial and defense aviation industry.
- Defense News provides a weekly news update on a wide range of military issues but with a focus on U.S. defense policy.
- Jane's Defense Weekly and Jane's Intelligence Review offer news updates and detailed articles on defense and intelligence issues from around the world.
- The Journal of Nuclear Materials Management (JNMM) carries articles and information related to fissile materials including international safeguards, materials control and accounting, non-proliferation and arms control, physical protection, packaging and transportation, and waste management.
- The Military Balance, published annually in October, offers an assessment of the military capabilities and defense economics of nearly 170 countries. Detailed country-by-country entries list military organizations, weapons and equipment holdings, personnel, and relevant economic and demographic data. Region-by-region analyses cover the major military and economic developments affecting security policy and the trade in weapons and other military equipment.
- Nuclear Fuel contains detailed business and political information about all aspects of the nuclear fuel cycle including uranium mining, conversion and enrichment, fuel fabrication, reprocessing and disposal.
- Nucleonics Week contains more general news from the commerical nuclear industry.
- Parameters: The U.S. Army War College Quarterly (carlisle-www.army.mil/usawc/parameters/), looks at the art and science of land warfare, joint and combined matters, national and international security affairs, military strategy, military leadership and management, military history, military ethics, and other topics of significant and current interest to the US Army and the Department of Defense.
- The SIPRI Yearbook, published annually by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, provides updates on a range of arms control and security issues including policy and stockpile changes.
- Space News offers articles on a wide range of international space issues.
Security Studies Journals
- Adelphi Papers are a monograph series published periodically by the International Institute for Strategic Studies. The series offers an in-depth analysis of strategic and defense topics and other contemporary issues in world politics.
- Comparative Strategy looks at U.S. national security and the basic assumptions behind U.S. defense and foreign policy.
- Contemporary Security Policy aims to examine the technical and political issues of arms control and disarmament and also to discuss the security implications of ethnic conflict, nationalism, economic decline and underdevelopment, environmental degradation, mass migration of refugees and drug trafficking. - International Organization offers articles on international institutions and cooperation in economic policy issues, security policies, and other aspects of international relations and foreign policy.
- International Security publishes theoretical essays on all aspects of the control and use of force, contemporary policy issues, and the underlying historical and theoretical questions. Tables of contents can be found at mitpress.mit.edu/journal-home.tcl?issn=01622889.
- The Journal of National Security Law covers research, and analysis regarding the rule of law, both domestic and international, as it impacts upon the national security interests of the United States.
- Pacifica Review offers a multidisciplinary perspective on the connections between local, national, international and transnational levels of global organization and between the cultural economic, ecological and geopolitical dimensions of change in world politics.
- Security Studies looks at issues of national security from both theoretical and historical angles.
- Strategic Survey is an annual synopsis of security-related events around the world. The significant events of the year are examined in their political context as are trends in international security.
- Survival is devoted to international politics and security affairs.
- World Politics looks at the disciplines, methods and viewpoints relevant to international relations and comparative politics, broadly defined.
Journals that Merge Science with Security Issues
- Journals devoted to the interface between science and public policy include Science and Public Affairs and Science and Public Policy. Issues in Science and Technology, published by the National Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Engineering, aims to provide a forum for debate of these issues and in the process inform public opinion and raise the quality of private and public decisionmaking.
- Science and Global Security publishes peer-reviewed articles that provide detailed analysis of technical issues relating to global security.
- Occasionally,Nature, Physics Today, Science, and Scientific American, will publish an article on security or arms control although these journals are devoted mainly to science articles. Technology Review, which covers innovation in and the dynamics of cutting-edge technologies, also occasionally carries an article of relevance to security issues.
